Modernizing Communication in a Historic Courthouse

Fusion Digital transformed Wayne County’s courthouse with state-of-the-art AV technology while preserving its historic integrity. Here’s how.

The Objective

Wayne County sought to modernize the audiovisual system in its historic courthouse without compromising the building’s architectural integrity. The primary goals were to improve communication during large meetings, enhance accessibility for the hearing impaired, and provide an efficient way to display video content. Additionally, the county aimed to increase transparency by integrating recording and streaming capabilities for public access to government proceedings.

Fusion Digital was selected to design and implement an AV solution that balanced modern functionality with seamless integration into the courthouse’s classic design.

The Approach

Comprehensive Audio Upgrade

Fusion Digital replaced outdated microphones with 20 Sennheiser gooseneck and 2 wireless handheld microphones to enhance flexibility, cable management, and sound clarity. The system was paired with an Ashly amplifier and wall-mounted column speakers to ensure a professional-grade audio experience with mute control capabilities.

ADA-Compliant Assisted Listening

To meet ADA compliance standards, Fusion Digital installed a WilliamsAV assisted listening system that provides clear, amplified audio for individuals with hearing impairments. This ensures inclusivity and enhances accessibility for all attendees.

Enhanced Video System for Transparency

To support public access and government transparency, Fusion Digital implemented two Sony 4K network cameras for high-resolution video capture. This system allows for seamless recording and live streaming of official meetings, ensuring all proceedings are easily accessible.

Centralized Control & Automation

An RTI control processor with a touch panel was integrated to provide effortless operation of the AV system. This allows for easy microphone management, video switching, and audio adjustments, streamlining functionality for courthouse staff.

Improved Visual Presentation

Fusion Digital replaced the outdated rolling screen with a Da-Lite motorized projection screen and an NEC projector with a short-throw lens for high-lumen, large-scale video display. An NEC confidence monitor was also installed at the podium, allowing presenters to view content without turning away from the audience.

Custom Aesthetic Integration

To maintain the courthouse’s historic character, Fusion Digital designed and installed custom-made wooden boxes to discreetly house microphone cabling and provide a wall plate for seamless guest presentations. Since in-floor boxes were not an option, this solution preserved both functionality and architectural integrity.

The Results Driven Solution

Fusion Digital’s comprehensive AV upgrade significantly improved audio clarity, video visibility, and overall meeting efficiency in the Wayne County Courthouse. The outdated microphones were replaced with a high-quality sound system, eliminating static and ensuring clear communication. The installation of a permanent video display improved visibility for all attendees, replacing the cumbersome rolling screen.

Additionally, the integration of an ADA-compliant assisted listening system ensured accessibility for hearing-impaired individuals. The entire system was designed to blend seamlessly into the courthouse’s historic architecture while delivering modern functionality, allowing Wayne County to enhance government communication and transparency with recording and live-streaming capabilities.
